A working week that lines up with global markets

Since the UAE federal government moved to a Saturday–Sunday weekend, most private-sector companies have followed a similar pattern. The change brought the working week closer to Europe, the Americas and much of Asia, but it also raised new planning questions for teams that work with regional partners, operate retail or hospitality shifts, or employ people who prefer to keep Friday afternoons light.

Understand your own team's pattern

Working hours and weekend arrangements can vary between employers, sectors and emirates, and are set out in each employee's contract in line with UAE labour regulations. Before redesigning schedules, map what actually applies in your business:

  • Which days each person is contracted to work.
  • Whether Friday is a shorter working day for some or all of the team.
  • Which clients, suppliers and overseas offices your team must overlap with.
  • Who works in customer-facing roles that need weekend cover.

Plan the week around energy and overlap

Monday to Thursday: collaboration days

These are the strongest days for team meetings, client presentations and workshops. Book meeting rooms for recurring sessions early, as mid-week slots tend to fill first.

Friday: focused and flexible

Many teams keep Friday for focused individual work, internal catch-ups and planning for the following week. Avoid scheduling long meetings around midday prayers, and keep afternoons for tasks that do not depend on others.

Saturday and Sunday: cover and catch-up

Businesses serving consumers, or teams supporting other time zones, may need people on weekends. Many Al Hamriya centres remain open on Saturday and Sunday, so staff on rotation can still work from a professional space rather than from home.

Working across time zones

The UAE is typically four hours ahead of London in winter and three hours ahead in summer, and around eight or nine hours ahead of New York depending on daylight saving. That gives a comfortable morning overlap with Asia and an afternoon overlap with Europe. Agree core collaboration hours and publish them on shared calendars so everyone knows when to expect replies.

Plan around public holidays

Islamic holidays such as Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha follow the lunar calendar, and exact dates are confirmed close to the time. Build tentative dates into project plans, confirm leave requests early and check centre opening hours during holiday periods before booking.

A clear weekly rhythm matters more than the exact days. When everyone knows when to meet and when to focus, work flows naturally.

Practical tips for managers

  • Publish a simple team calendar showing working days, anchor days and weekend rotations.
  • Use recurring bookings for weekly meetings so rooms are secured in advance.
  • Rotate weekend cover fairly and record it clearly.
  • Review the schedule every quarter as clients and projects change.

With a little structure, the Saturday–Sunday weekend can give teams both better alignment with international partners and a more predictable, balanced week.
